Wild Goose Pagoda

The Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi’an was built on the grounds of the Buddist Temple of Great Compassion (Grace). The Temple of Grace was built by Emperor Gaozong in memory of his mother’s kindness and grace. The pagoda was built to hold the Buddhist sutra brought back from India by the monk Xuanzang (and therefore is considered by some to be the center of Chinese Buddhism).

The pagoda leans (like the Tower of Pisa in Italy) due to the ground settling under its weight. This photo shows the lean.
